Evaluated Alternative Lineo™ – Non-toxic, renewable material replacing petroleum-based products Lineo™ by Stora Enso is a renewable, wood-based, non-toxic alternative to fossil-based materials. Lineo™ is made of lignin, a complex plant-derived polymer found in the cell walls of almost all dry-land plants. The refined kraft lignin is available as a stable free-flowing brown powder. Lineo™ can be used to replace oil-based phenolic materials in a range of applications, such as in resins for plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), paper lamination and insulation material. After cellulose, lignin is the biggest renewable source of carbon anywhere. Lineo™ is ideal for companies looking for alternatives to petroleum-based products. Evaluated Alternative CTO – Crude tall oil Crude tall oil (CTO) by Stora Enso is a special source of bio-based products. It is extracted from Nordic Softwood – a natural, renewable resource from our sustainably managed North European forests – during the kraft pulping process. This valuable ingredient of the wood is a mixture of fatty acids, rosin and other neutral compounds. The crude tall oil can be further refined to different fractions like fatty acids, rosins and sterols. These intermediates can be used in a wide variety of applications and products across various industrial and consumer markets.
